who invented the toilet paper
who invented the toilet paper?
The first recorded use of toilet paper was in the 6th century by the Chinese. However, it wasn’t until 1857 that toilet paper as we know it was invented by Joseph Gayetty. Gayetty’s invention consisted of flat sheets of paper impregnated with aloe vera, which were sold in packages of 500 sheets.
Toilet paper became increasingly popular in the late 19th century with the advent of indoor plumbing. Prior to that, people used a variety of materials for personal hygiene including leaves, grass, rags, and even sticks.
While Gayetty is typically credited as the inventor of toilet paper, there is evidence that suggests that other people had come up with similar ideas before him. In 1871, John Dickenson patented a machine that produced flat sheets of tissue paper. And in 1879, another man by the name of Thomas Seymour filed a patent for a continuous roll of toilet paper.
It wasn’t until 1890 that the first perforated rolls of toilet paper were introduced. This made it much easier to tear off individual sheets, and it quickly became the preferred method of dispensing toilet paper. Today, there are a variety of different types of toilet paper available on the market, from ultra-soft to super-absorbent. No matter what your preference, there’s sure to be a type of toilet paper that’s perfect for you!
