When Was Chess Invented?
The origins of chess are unknown, but there are several theories as to how the game was developed. For instance, it may have originated in India, Persia, or the Middle East. The Middle East, however, is an entirely different story. However, it is still a popular belief that chess was invented in the Middle East. Regardless of the answer, the history of the game is fascinating.
Origins
Chess has Indian origins. The game was first played around the seventh century, according to Harold James Ruthven Murray, a historian. He believes that chess was influenced by the Indian strategy board game chaturanga. The pieces of the game are shaped like four different divisions of an army: the chariot, elephant, and horse. A chessboard has eight squares on each side, representing the different facets of the game.
Origins in India
There is no early mention of chess in Indian literature, but the game has been documented in Persian and Arabic literature. The first known mention of chess in Sanskrit writings comes from Bana’s “Harschascharita” (c. 640 C.E.). This pre-Islamic document also links the game with the Sassanid rulers of Persia. This citation refers to a game called “Kamamak” – a game based on chatrang.
Origins in Persia
Chess’s history dates back to ancient India, where it was called Chaturanga, which means “four limbs” in Sanskrit. Ancient Indian armies were comprised of four different pieces, called chaturanga. The game then migrated to Persia, where it was adopted by Arabs. The game spread northward from Persia, and was later introduced to Spain by the Moors.
Origins in the Middle East
The game of chess originated in the Arab world, spread to China and Southeast Asia, and eventually reached Western Europe. The game of chess is thought to have evolved into the related games of xiangqi and shogi, before eventually making its way into Western Europe. Although the origins of the game are unclear, chess did reach Europe in the twelfth century, when it was adopted by medieval kings and nobility.
Variations of chess
There are many variations of chess, some of which date back centuries. The oldest are probably as ancient as the game itself, although there are regional variants as well. While some of these variants are older than chess, most were developed by individuals and small groups to give the game a new twist. These variants were intended for the chess community as well as a larger audience. Many are considered public domain, although some are proprietary, such as Knightmare Chess. These variants often release materials for play as commercial products.
