What Can Bearded Dragons Eat?
There are some foods that bearded dragons can eat, and they may even be able to enjoy some of them. These foods are Meat, Fruit, Fireflies, and Cauliflower. Keep reading to learn more about what you should be giving your beardie. Also, remember to be gentle with your beardie when introducing new foods. Your pet may become overly picky and even throw a fit if you try to change their diet suddenly.
Fruits
Some fruits can be given to bearded dragons as treats, and are even suitable as a main dish. However, it’s important to remember that fruits are high in sugar and should only be offered as treats. They also contain high amounts of oxalate, which prevents the absorption of calcium. Beardies need calcium to remain healthy and strong, and the high water content helps with digestion.
Meat
You can offer your bearded dragon meat on special occasions. Just keep in mind that it can get parasites from exposed meat. You can also mix meat with calcium-rich insects, but do not give your dragon large amounts. Because of its high phosphorus content, meat poses a bigger threat to your beardie than insects do. Also, if your beardie likes the taste of meat, it might not be the best option for your dragon.
Fireflies
In the wild, bearded dragons are known to eat fireflies. These insects contain lucibufagins, a toxic chemical found in reptiles. Fireflies cause vomiting, regurgitation, and respiratory distress in bearded dragons. Within 15 minutes to two hours, the fireflies kill the bearded dragon. Other plants and insects that bearded dragons cannot eat include holly, bracken fern, and daffodil.
Cauliflower
Cauliflower can be fed to your bearded dragon. It has less goitrogens and oxalates than other vegetables. However, you should avoid feeding it to baby bearded dragons. This is because the cauliflower contains a compound called goitrogens. Goitrogens are toxic to deserted reptiles and are especially bad for baby bearded dragons.
Canned food
One of the questions you might have is, “Can bearded dragons eat canned food?” Fortunately, this is a relatively easy question to answer. Canned vegetables, including carrots, squash, and peas, are relatively inexpensive and readily available. They also do not spoil easily. While some nutrients are lost during canning, the vast majority are still retained when vegetables are picked at their peak. Also, during the process of canning, dangerous bacteria are destroyed. So, while you may be hesitant to feed your dragon canned vegetables, there are some things you should keep in mind.
Eggs
The protein-rich yolk of an egg is a great choice for your Bearded Dragon’s diet. It is a good source of proteins and a great alternative to feeder insects. Generally, a half-egg should be enough to satisfy the dietary needs of an adult Beardie. However, boiled eggs contain less protein and are easier for your Beardie to digest. To make your Beardie happy and healthy, try to feed your Beardie eggs every other day or two.
